The 6th Conference of the African Association of Women in Geosciences « Women and Geosciences for Afrian Integration », Yaoundé (Cameroun), 23-27 April 2012
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1. Among the 136 participants present at the Conference, we had 78 women and 58 men. 77 oral presentations were effectively made out of the 96 programmed plus 5 posters.
2. The 6th AAWG Conference was launched on April 23, 2012 by cameroonian administrative, political and academic authorities and international organizations. 136 participants from 15 countries effectively took part at the sessions.
3. The wish of the authorities and participants present at the Conference was to make this event an opportunity to valorize and to celebrate the advocacy of women in Geosciences in support of the development of Africa in particular and the world in general.
4. Although the georesources can be the source of internal and international conflicts, given the fact that they are often transborderly located, the geoscientists pledged to play a major role from the exploration to the exploitation of these georesources and in the conservation of the environment. This role should be recognized and dually granted by decision makers. In this regard, the notion of African integration that is well understood and applied by Africans, based on the ancestral African saying that
1. a. “one finger cannot pick up a grain of groundnut”,
2. “it is easier to break a piece of isolated wood than a bundle of attached wood”, would be real and concrete.
5. A better appropriation of the geosciences and adaptation of people to their surroundings would require a reform in the teaching of the Earth Sciences in Africa from the Primary to Secondary school, alongside with regular training for teachers, education and scientific awareness for the population.
6. Taking into account the problems involving present day geosciences and the challenges confronting African geoscientists, the partnership between African researchers seems more important towards the integration of the people and sustainable development in Africa. At the core of this partnership, detailed cartographic mapping and more indepth laboratory analyses are recommended to complete the data acquired up till now in order to establish and/or reinforce regional correlations.
7. Discussions around water resources grouped a great number of the communications (38 out of the 77 presented). On the one hand, it seemed necessary to carry out specific regional studies to solve the problem of drinkable water from underground sources in the large cities and, on the other hand, the necessity to associate the different geological disciplines in the realization of hydrogeologic studies for modeling.
8. Indepth research for the valorization of certain natural imputs (instead of chemical fertilizers) to improve the quality of soils would contribute to preserve our environment.
9. During the debates on new concepts: geodiversity, geological heritage having several dimensions (scientific, educative and economic), geoconservation, geosites, geoparks, all that concerns man and his environment, and what can yield economic benefits to the local population, Ecotourism emerged as an interesting economic potential to be promoted by all the African states.
10. Pertinent research results from the conference will be published in a special issue of the multidisciplinary journal of the Advanced Teachers’ Training College (ENS) Yaounde “SYLLABUS”
11. The AAWG expresses its gratitude to the government of Cameroon, and appreciates the contribution of ENS in hosting this successful conference. PREAMBULE
La science et la technologie qui devraient apporter une réponse aux besoins des populations locales en vue d’un développement socio-économique durable semble peu profiter au continent africain.
Les conférences de l’Association Africaine des Femmes en Géosciences «AAWG» constituent une plate forme d’échange qui vise à renforcer les partenariats scientifiques entre les femmes africaines et d’ailleurs. Notre défi est de développer une recherche-développement qui prend en compte les besoins réels des populations africaines sans pour autant hypothéquer la recherche fondamentale.
La 5ème conférence de l’AAWG a été organisée en 2010 en Côte d’Ivoire, la 4èmeconférence s’est tenue en 2008 en Egypte, la troisième au Maroc en 2006, la seconde en Ouganda en 2004 et la première en Afrique du Sud en 2002. Afin de faire de cette sixième conférence que nous organisons au Cameroun un réel succès, nous invitons tous les géoscientifiques à se joindre à nous en 2012 à Yaoundé.
